Is Drinking Herbal Tea the Same As Drinking Water?

Herbs provide numerous wellness benefits, from soothing cold symptoms to relieving stress. Our selection of herbal teas are as diverse as their health-promoting properties – there’s sure to be something perfect for every taste and wellness goal! But does drinking herbal tea count as hydration? In short, yes – but be careful not to substitute water with herbal tea drinks!

Contrary to true tea (black, green, white, oolong and pu-erh), herbal infusions like chamomile, peppermint, rooibos and hibiscus contain no caffeine; thus making them the ideal choice for those sensitive to caffeine or looking for an evening beverage that won’t induce jitters. Our selection of herbal teas even help promote sleep!*

Most herbal teas contain no caffeine; however, certain varieties such as yerba mate, guayusa, yaupon and yuengling might. Even so, they will still have less of a diuretic effect than coffee and unlikely dehydrate you as quickly.

As more organic or Fair Trade Certified teas are made available, many can now boast this ethical designation and should only be consumed sparingly. Unfortunately, these non-“true” herbal teas do not include Camellia sinensis leaves – instead, these varieties often include botanical and fruit infusions like hibiscus flowers, rose hips or oat straw for flavor – thus diminishing hydration benefits compared to those with no additional ingredients added – hence why these beverages should only be enjoyed occasionally.

The Beverage Hydration Index2 shows that tea ranks near water as far as its ability to hydrate is concerned, whereas coffee’s caffeine content makes it slightly dehydrating due to diuretic effects – meaning your body loses more fluid through urine than it absorbs through diet or absorption of fluid through the skin. Therefore, consumption of caffeinated beverages must be done responsibly while making sure you still drink adequate quantities of water each day.

Tea is a healthy beverage with many health advantages, from soothing cold symptoms to aiding digestion and providing an energetic boost without the jitters, sluggishness or sugar high often associated with coffee.

But keep in mind that one cup of tea should not replace your daily water consumption; some individuals may have difficulty digesting certain herbs. Also, organically grown tea is highly recommended as traditional herbicides may linger on its leaves and stems causing potential risks to health.

Organically-grown teas from us are also certified kosher and gluten-free. Additionally, we only work with trusted suppliers who share our commitment to quality and transparency – so you can rest easy knowing we only ever sell the highest-quality, purest herbal teas possible!
